Lore
One. The knife described a single digit in his flesh. The cold point pulled the line parallel to its brothers. The head of the one keeping watch lolled at his feet. He would return with the rough dark sack to recover his burden but for now he needed to finish his task. The thin line of blood on his arm would soon become many. Footsteps in the leaves brought him toward the raised voices that begged and threatened in the road. The Tallykeeper would make his tally. |
Two. A merchant cowered in the dirt at the feet of a man in a filthy woolen hood who held steel in his hand. The man who was in charge. He would be the next to fall. The cart of wares had been overturned and the other thieves scrambled over it like rats. The axe fell and claimed its second head and only as the threats fell abruptly silent did the faces turn to find him. Blood drained out and left them pale as their leader drained his into the dirt. |
Three was the only one who drew a blade and snatched at the fate of the foolish and the brave. A wild swing broke against the haft of the axe and rebounded. The Tallykeeper cut the man down. The need to mark the death itched under his skin like insects and he nearly reached for his knife. He knew that there were more that had run from him into the trees. The merchant too was gone. He had nearly lost his life for his wares and when the chance to reclaim one had presented itself the other was gladly sacrificed to the road and whatever scavengers would claim it. |
Four. The highwayman was crouched low behind the overturned cart among the merchant's scattered wares. He had flung himself down when the Tallykeeper drifted out from the trees and his axe whispered bloodshed and punishment. With eyes screwed tight he prayed that he would live to open them again. He prayed that he would be overlooked and that the soft grating footsteps coming closer would pass by. They stopped. He didn't feel anything. |
Five. The one who ran but came back to fight. Not the leader of the band but a man with aspirations and a will to act. It's just a man in a hood, he thought to himself. Only a man all covered in scars and holding an axe and that could be anyone. There was no such thing as the Tallykeeper and whoever this man was would regret hiding behind the mantle of a boogyman when he had a knife in his ribs. But the knife clattered to the ground and the fourth highwayman sucked air through his chest as the axe came free. And then all the air left him. |
Six heard a gasp and a thunk. Gravel on metal and a short grunt of exertion and then he couldn't hear anything but the rustle of leaves and the cracking of branches in the distance as someone stumbled through the dark. The bark on his back was rough and cool and safe and he wondered why he had ever joined the band of thieves and killers at all. Whether the heavy clink of coin was worth the price. He paid it before he could make up his mind. |
Seven was the one who almost got away. The branches snapped and beat at him and the roots reached up to pull at his feet and bring him to the forest floor and hold him there. He could hear nothing but his own heart hammering in his mouth and his ears and his temples and the snap and crash of his terrified flight into the yawning dark. He could hear his breath tumble out from him in fearful moans and the horrible rasp as he pulled it back in. Too loud. The Tallykeeper heard it too. |
Eight. A man frantic with adrenaline and greed who had returned to the cart to fill his pockets when he thought he would be safe. The axe surprised him as it swept through his neck and bit into the wood of the cart with a hollow echoing splinter. The Tallykeeper pulled away the false bottom of the cart and exposed the hidden cargo to the night as the highwayman twitched and cooled in the mud. The merchant's secret wares trembled and wept as they pulled at their bindings and looked on the man in the hood with wide eyes that drank the moonlight. The Tallykeeper would have one more mark to make. |
Nine heads made the sack bulge and stretch as it bounced in the Tallykeeper's cart. Eight bandits who would no longer haunt the quiet roads. One merchant who could not run far enough. |
