|"You know why I'm here," you say.
"Perhaps. But enlighten me."
"I'm arresting you for murder."
"Oh? And what makes you think I murdered her."
Your senses tingle a warning. That wasn't a careless slip of the tongue. The mayor just revealed his knowledge of the crime. He doesn't care that you know the truth...
"She clawed at you when you strangled her. And unless you've had time to destroy it, there's a garment in your wardrobe that matches the threads I found under her fingernails."
"And if I have?"
"There was dried blood under her fingernails as well. From the scratches hidden under that white lead powder you've smeared on your face. A mage should be able to prove it's your blood."
"Splendid work! Worthy of a guard captain, no less." He pauses, and his mouth opens in a gaping smile that reminds you of an open grave. "My son grows tired of Fallows. We're thinking of moving him to Dracoshire instead. That means his position here will be vacant."
"If I wanted a bribe, I'd have asked Verus for one and saved myself the walk. You're wasting my time."
There's a crash like thunder as a chunk of the left-hand wall gives way -- a rectangular section of oak paneling and ancient stone toppling into the room and slamming against the floor. A huge ogre of a man lumbers through the hole it leaves behind, a massive brute with tattoos across his bare, muscular chest. He's clutching an axe and a mace in his ham-like fists. Both weapons look like they could smash open the doors to a castle.
Aurelius Bloodwyn sighs.
"Rift... I explained to you how the secret passage worked."
"Sorry, boss. Couldn't find the switch."
"No matter." The mayor points at you. "Rift -- kill that man."
"You got it, boss."
|The raging goliath is too dumb to know he's been killed. He lunges at you, swinging his axe and his mace in big sweeping arcs that would be lucky to hit the side of a house. They have no chance of hitting a guardsman who knows when to get out of the way.
But his brain finally catches up with things, and he notices the big hole in his chest where you drove your sword.
He grunts, and drops to his knees.
He falls onto his face, and the crash is only a little quieter than the one the wall made.
You dash across the room. Your left hand falls on Mayor Bloodwyn's shoulder, yanks him away from the passage and sends him staggering into the middle of the room.
"I'll give you anything!" he moans, in the voice of a doomed man. "Anything you want."
The nobleman screams. Then he dies.
And the world starts to wobble.
You welcome the now familiar tides of energy as they pour through the gaps in this disintegrating imitation of reality. They take hold of you as before, sweeping you along in their powerful pull. You surrender to their currents, until you draw near another of the blinking portals. Then you leap.
|"He's running away, boss," the lumbering brute says.
