Raids are a great way to get items.
For new players, join as many as you can and attack at once with one stamina (called tagging). The best raids to tag are Together in Eclectic Dreams raids and Dragons' Claw raids . This will get you decent starter items quickly.
Once you get good starter items you finish all possible legendary crafts related to raids.
Click the Loot button to see possible rewards.
The more damage you do, the better chances you have at getting better items.
Do your fair share of damage (boss health/max number of players, FS) and get at least one guaranteed epic item.
Continue doing damage up to your optimal share (varies by raid size, OS) to get the best loot to damage ratio possible.
Continued damaged after doing your OS will give you XP, but is not efficient for getting better loot. It is usually best to focus elsewhere. But make sure someone finishes the kill!
For the achievement points you need to do ~50% of FS to the Nightmare version of raids.
