IX. At last the man came to a port he had never sailed to before, a place where the language was foreign to him and the people suspicious and strange. He told the people of his family, of his town, of the monster. The people did not turn away, but spit at the ground and met his gaze with eyes that shared his hate, and the man thought that perhaps these people had once seen great footprints and red sand too. They pointed the man up the road, up the hill, to a door. He found the blacksmith there, with strong arms to hammer steel, and black coals for eyes, and enchantment on his breath. And so the man told him of ripe death, red sand, ragged bones. The man told him of hate, and a monster. The blacksmith nodded, and spit, and began to hammer the steel and weave the words. To forge the armor that would take the man below the waves, give him breath, give him speed. To make him a warrior of hate. To let him live as his quarry lived, hunt as his quarry hunted. To leave the land and humanity forever. The blacksmith's hammer fell, forging the armor that would make the man into a monster of the sea.
