Lore
1. The bandits came in the night, quietly creeping through the sleepy town to steal anything they could lay their hands on and carry off. Weapons, food, coin: it was all theirs; and the only trace they left behind to reveal their cruelty were the corpses of some unfortunate guards who got in their way. |
2. They made for the trees. They would be safely far away, under the confines of the forest canopy, before the townsfolk woke to find what had happened. Pleased with themselves and the weight of their spoils, the bandits moved deeper into the wilds as they counted the value of gold and steel. |
3. Drinking and celebrating their success, the bandits set up camp for the night, deep in the forest, where the canopy soared high overhead and the thickness of the trees hid their fires from view. They were cunning and clever, they told themselves. They began their planning: attacks to be waged on other towns nearby, with the heart of the forest as their base of operations. Though the hour grew late, the fire held and their mirth prevailed as it had for hours past.
And then the beasts came. |
4. Like lightning in the dark, fur and fang came at them with vengeance. Tearing and chewing, gnawing at them. Many fell with the first assault, but those who could still stand recovered their weapons, slaying what they could. The forest filled with howls and snarling; steel bit into softer flesh and jaws snapped at bone and marrow. Blood flowed and bones broke as the animals were routed, forced to retreat in scattered numbers, away from the forest's center. |
5. The bandits surveyed the carnage before them. Fewer heads would mean more money for the survivors, but the price of their brothers and sisters was still costly. Then, as quickly as they had first appeared, the beasts returned to the clearing's edge. Lined up and ready for battle, the beasts snarled and snapped. Men arose from the forest, clad in armor and riding atop stags armored with iron. They approached as warriors, bringing with them the thickness of silence and fear. |
6. The bandits held their breaths and the warriors rode down upon them, one by one. Those lucky enough to escape claws and hooves in their attempt to fight back found themselves confronted with maces and magic. Vines twisted and snaked their way from the confines of the earth, gripping and choking any who attempted to flee. And as the final bandit lay upon the ground, battered and bleeding, his eyes beheld one last sight: an armored man, a warrior, stood before him, with a stag at his side, sending hot breath into the cold air. Its antlers rose majestically into the night. But it was the face of the man, so serious and solemn, which clung to the bandit until the vines finally did their work and the darkness took hold. |
7. Daylight crept into the forest's heart, scattered through the leaves and branches of the canopy. A beautiful sight it was to behold; and there was little sign of the bandits from the night before. No fire nor blade remained to tell of battle that had taken place; only a floor of vines and leaves remained.
The forest claimed its secrets, and kept them close. |
The Wild Wardens are sworn to protect nature at any cost. They are not fond of outsiders. Accompanied by druids amongst their ranks, the wardens tend to keep to themselves, hiding deep within the recesses of the forests. They leave only out of necessity or to track especially elusive intruders. |
Stags have carried the wardens into battle for countless generations. They are trained from an early age to accept a rider and will defend the wilds as viciously as those they carry. They are as powerful as they are beautiful and it is said that to behold one is to behold a dream. |
