Lore
I. "We have a staggering list of accomplishments, and I for one say we have no reason to fear!" Bellowed Tiny Tom to those gathered in the cabinet below him.
"No one thought we could steal a horse -- a whole horse! -- but we did. Now we have a horse! My critics may say that it is very difficult to feed and even more difficult to use for anything, but that’s another meeting entirely." |
II. Tom looked over his gathered people from atop the tall jar. Placing one fist on his hip, he gestured out over them at the house beyond.
"We made the former masters of this house think it was haunted so they fled. Now, look what we have built. A flourishing city inside one home. We can expand for years and call this house our land. We all made this happen. Together." |
III. He allowed the people below him to chatter amongst themselves for a moment as they looked outside the cabinet, over the great highways of wood scraps and little metal rods. As they began to fall silent he took on a more somber tone.
"If a giant threatens the town of the big people, it threatens us too. But if we kill it, the people of this town will know we are heroes. We will keep this house forever. Our home. We must defend it. Are you with me?!" Dozens of cheers belted out from all corners of the cabinet and the counter beyond. A battle was to be fought. |
IV. Over the next few days, Tom and his closest advisors went about the supervision of preparations. They may have been small, but Tom had never seen a folk more industrious than his own. Little ballistae were crafted to shoot grappling hooks of needles, shot with such velocity they would provide supports for his little folk to climb up. |
V. In the last few days of preparation the house was completely quiet. Usually there was singing, gossip, or rowdy debates about expanding under the floorboards.
Now it was as quiet as a mouse. Who, ironically, were the loudest creatures working, carrying the heavier materials to and fro. |
VI. Finally the day arrived. His mages and wizards had finished their special concoction to be delivered to the giant. Soldiers and their families hugged and kissed their goodbyes as the mice were saddled and the supplies were loaded.
As they began to ride off into the small crack in the floorboards that led them out, Tom spurred his rodent to the head of the column. "Remember this sight, warriors. Look back, and remember this is the home we're fighting for." |
VII. The journey was fraught with peril. A light rain formed a small trickle of a stream, which took hours to ford the entire force over. The contingent had to take shelter under the root of a large oak as they waited for a circling flock to pass by. A passing caravan of wagons kicked up so much dust it made it almost impossible to navigate.
But they overcame, and in time they finally made it to the edge of town. From there it would take at least two days hard march to reach the giants lair. |
VIII. It was a hard march. Men were injured, mice were lost, but the army marched on.
Through the mud, through the rot, and through the dirt, the littlest legion pushed forward. As they filtered into the vast cavernous lair of the giant, they were so weary it felt like the battle had already been fought. But the greatest danger was yet to begin. |
IX. The giant lay fast asleep as the little people climbed far above it. There was a perilous six foot fall from their path through a crack in the cavern wall and the head of the great beast, but they were sure footed.
String was cast down, and they began to descend. When the majority of the force had deployed onto the giant's bed, they began gingerly packing the mage's concoction into the massive ear canals of the humongous beast. Tragedy struck when the foul beast rolled over, taking out a third of the attacking force. |
