Lore
"You call that music?" the woman said. "It sounds like someone's being murdered!"
"Aye?" The piper drew his sword. "Dinna ken what a murder sounds like, lass, but we could always find out..." "I... I mean your playing's marvelous! Simply marvelous!" |
Titarans with a lack of fondness for bagpipes claim that the instruments were invented to drive away banshees, who couldn't abide the horrific, bloodcurdling racket. |
When a musician removes their hat, people tend to roll their eyes and wait for the begging to start. Unless it's a piper. Then they hand over their gold, lest they be headbutted. |
"Why're you wearing a dress?" the drunkard asked.
"Tis nae a dress!" the piper said. "Tis a kilt! And ye'll be getting kilt too, if ye don't watch your tongue!" The drunk scratched his head for a moment. Then understanding dawned, and he kept his mouth shut. |
Ancient Titaran legends say that bagpipes were once infernal creatures -- fiends with bulbous bodies and numerous appendages. When heroes slew them to liberate the land, they turned their carcasses into instruments to play at the victory feast.
This probably isn't actually true, but it would explain why demons tend to enjoy the wailing of the pipes. |
According to tradition, nothing should be worn under one's kilt. However, in polite society, where aristocrats might swoon and drop their monocles if an inopportune gust of wind proves too revealing, it's considered advisable to dispense with this particular custom. |
Pipers tend to wear a dirk at their belts, and a knife known as a sgian-dubh in their boots. After all, when people insult your playing, it helps to have a number of sharp objects within easy reach. |
Piping fraternities and sororities each have their own rings to mark their members, and the faces of their hecklers. |
Hardy ponies carry pipers across the Titaran highlands. These steeds are known to be fond of their masters' music, and will sometimes even neigh along. Detractors suggest that it's impossible to distinguish between the sound of the horses and that of the instruments. |
