Lore
10. He glugged and glugged. Even when his chest heaved and groaned beneath the wash of water, convulsing like a drowning man's, he drank. He set the empty bottle down, gasping. His cheeks reddened as he met the woman's eyes. But she merely laughed.
"More water!" she said. "Our friend's thirsty!" A burly man appeared from around the caravan, and stared at him over thick black moustaches. The boy gawped at the broad-bladed scimitar on his belt. But the warrior merely bowed, went inside, and returned with another bottle of water. He set it down and withdrew once more. "Eat," the woman said. "The Scarred Desert's taken your strength." She picked up a handful of grapes. He held out his upturned palm, before he remembered. The woman blinked at the grime and blood. |
11. The boy couldn't lift his gaze. It remained fixed on his own dirty red hand, as though he were a fakir reading past and future in its lines. The woman cried out, and he flinched.
"Azim!" She looked round, as the sturdy warrior returned. "Make a fire and warm some water. Our guest has to clean himself." "As you wish," Azim said. He set about his task, building the fire at a distance. The boy could only stare at the smiling woman with wide eyes. |
12. "What's your name?" she said.
"S..." He paused. His name... Something held his tongue. Not fear, or caution. A thing he couldn't quite understand. But that name, that old name, belonged to another boy. One whose hands weren't red. So he spoke a different word instead, the name of a beast who spilled blood. "Shir." "I'm Nadia. So, my little lion, who was your prey?" Shir spoke, and the story swirled over the grapes. |
13. "Where will you go now?" Nadia said.
Shir pointed towards the horizon, where the fading tracks led. "To Firaz?" The woman nodded. "That's my home. It's a good place to lose yourself, and begin a new life. But it can be a cruel city. The sultan's men show no mercy to anyone who can't pay the residence tax. They tie them to posts in the marketplace, and flay them with whips as a warning to others. Do you have money?" He shook his head. "Then the gods were wise to bring you to me. I employ dozens of Firaz's destitute, to spare them from the lash. My houses need many... servants, and I'll gladly hire a lion who protected his mother's honor." |
14. Shir mouthed a prayer, thanking the heavens for their kindness. Again the girl's image flitted across his thoughts. His heart swelled. When he saw his first savior again, he wouldn't be a vagabond with filthy clothes and guilty hands. He'd be a servant in this rich and respected woman's household. Perhaps the lady read his thoughts, for she gave an indulgent smile.
"You'll have to wash and put on clean clothes before you come into my caravan. Azim! Fetch something from the silks." The warrior, who was heating a large vessel atop his fire, bowed his head and went inside. Nadia gestured at the bronze pot. Shir went to it, then hesitated. He looked at her over his shoulder. She laughed. "I've seen my share of men. You won't offend me, little lion." |
15. Shir took the girl's flask from inside his shirt and set it aside. Then he pulled the garment over his head, struggling against its stiff, stained cloth, and cast it away. The boy reached for his trousers' cord. He glanced at Nadia again. The lady's eyes were brighter than ever, and there was a hint of gentle amusement in her smile.
His mother's admonitions filled his head, all her talk of modesty, propriety, decency. But screams and blood drove them away. Shir blinked the memories from his mind. That time, that boy was gone. He took a deep breath and undressed. Then he bathed, his back to Nadia, cleaning the past and the world from his limbs. "Here," she said. Shir turned, and the lady stood before him holding a pile of folded silks. She looked him up and down, and he felt his face redden. "A beautiful lion indeed," she said. "Rassys' gifts are always welcomed in Firaz..." |
16. The inside of Nadia's caravan was exquisite. They lounged in luxurious softness, nestled amidst rugs, drapes, and cushions whose dyed patterns surpassed the sky's most beautiful birds. Even his tribe's leaders hadn't possessed such finery in their homes. And the remarkable woman waited on him herself whilst Azim sat outside and drove the camels, as though he were a grand sultan reclining in his palace. She plied him with grapes, dates, figs, and honey. And the water flowed like a stream sparkling in the sunlight. Soon thirst was a distant, forgotten thing. Left far behind with his filthy, discarded clothes.
"Drink," she said. Nadia held another vessel now, a ceramic jug painted with pictures of peacocks. The creatures' blue and purple plumage was rich, vibrant. So were the cloying scents that rose from it and mingled with the lady's perfume. "In the villages they drink water, but in Firaz we drink wine." Shir drank. Fruity, flowery sensations filled his mouth and then his mind. He was drinking gardens and galaxies, sampling untold delights for the first time in his young life. He floated among smiling peacock gods and thanked them for their bounty. |
17. "Wake up, my little lion..."
The universe danced around Shir, filling eternity with its sumptuous hues and exquisite sensations. His saviors, the unnamed girl and Nadia, were spread across the stars -- gazing down at him from celestial visages and smiles that carved the cosmos. "Wake up..." Those words fell from Nadia's galactic lips and drenched him in a torrent of honeyed wine. Shir blinked, and overlapping realities vied for mastery. But at last the waking world won out. He found himself lying on a pile of rugs and cushions, looking up into the lady's keen eyes. "We're at the gates of Firaz," she said. |
18. Shir pushed the drapes aside and leaned his head out of the caravan's window, into the cool evening air. He drew in a deep breath. He'd never seen anything like it. Ahead of them, a line of vehicles, camels, and horses stretched towards a grand archway of gold and blue stone -- an entrance set in a massive wall that seemed to go on forever, and might have encircled his tribe's lands a thousand times over. Domed spires rose up beyond that immense barrier, tall enough to scrape the heavens.
"It's wondrous, isn't it?" Nadia said. "And it's your new home. But first..." She gave his shoulder a gentle tug. Shir turned, and she passed him a sheet of parchment. Black ink snaked across it in long, languid lines. "I... I can't..." His cheeks burned. "Ah, you can't read and write? There's no shame in that, little lion. Many come to Firaz ignorant, and gain their learning here. This contract names you as my servant, so the guards can't seize you and demand the residency tax. Take this quill and make whatever mark you can..." |
