Lore
I. There were many mourners, as befitted the funeral of a noble knight. Solemn kinsfolk turned out by the score from the Bloodwyn family's many branches. The grandchild and namesake was at their forefront, bright mischievous eyes somber for once. Young tears became tiny watery wyverns that flitted through the ranks of West Krunan chivalry. Those warriors filled much of the temple, stiff and resplendent in their multifarious tabards and panoplies. They represented all orders of knighthood -- from Rhynhart's Coeurs Violets to Stromhamre's Ottosorden. None of them could fail to honor the departed. Nor had the peasantry been loath to come and pay their respects to one who'd spent long years defending commoner and aristocrat alike. Grimy, hard worn jerkins mingled amongst fine clothing and polished steel. All were equal beneath bittersweet clouds of grief and remembrance. |
II. The crowd drifted through the temple doors, fading away like the cleric's sermon. They ceded the vast chamber to those few who had the greatest claim. Half a dozen men and women remained, standing around the coffin, their armor painted in six of the rainbow's hues. Sir Bohemond the Orange murmered a paladin's prayer. Sir Emeric the Yellow bowed his head, pondering the grand deeds of a warrior he had often heard lauded but never met. Sir Aaron the Blue gazed into frozen features that seemed only to slumber, spoke a silent farewell, and remembered. Sir Colbaeus the Green was silent and sober, his mind given to grief instead of mushrooms. Sar Wenni the Violet bit her lip and glanced at the doorway. Tears glistened like dew on Sar Meura the Indigo's furry cheeks. She reached into the casket and clasped a hand encased in scarlet steel. |
III. "Should we..." Wenni pointed at the object on the red breastplate. A gauntlet pinned it there, revealing only the portion inscribed with golden letters.
"It's not for us," Aaron said. "Why isn't she here?" Aaron, Meura, and Bohemond exchanged glances. "What?" the violet knight asked. "What is it?" "Sar Velania..." Meura began. |
IV. Five years ago...
"Traitor!" Sir Tarquin's eyes were bloodshot, laced with threads the same shade as the panoply that hung ill-fastened around his frame. "Traitor bi-" He stumbled. Loose red plates clattered out a disheveled symphony. His former squire darted forward and caught him, supporting his armored bulk with strong, wiry arms. He growled and pushed Velania away. "Get your hands off me!" Strong ale rolled off his breath. "You've taken the order! Do you want my pride as well?" "I-" "Too old! That's what you told them, isn't it? Whispering behind my back like a gossiping fishwife! Old and foolish! Unfit to wear the armor!" |
V. "That's right! Go!" Tarquin snatched up the ale jug. Dark liquid spilled down his chin and splashed on his cuirass as he glugged. "Go to the ceremony and swear your oaths. Talk about loyalty with your dagger in my spine!"
Velania was in the doorway when the pitcher shattered on the wall. Droplets sprayed across her face. She whirled around, tears glistening in eyes that had never wept at suffering nor flinched before a foe. "You nearly got yourself killed! And Sir Fulmeh! You were the best of us, but-" "And I still am!" He reached for his sword. His hand fumbled and scratched at the pommel, before he found his grip and tore the blade from its scabbard. "Fight me! If you want to take the order, do it like a true knight and wrest it from me!" Velania walked through the doorway. "Come back and fight! Coward! You don't deserve my mantle!" |
VI. The present...
Sar Velania stood on the temple's threshold. Her gloved hand hovered a few inches from the door, as though repelled by an arcane barrier. A million memories danced through her brain. This had been a mistake... She shouldn't have come. The red knight walked back to her horse. Scarlet Sunrise stared at her, dark orbs deep and judgmental. "Don't look at me like that that," Velania whispered. She stroked the mare's mane. "I can't." She closed her eyes. But the memories were brighter and more insistent in the darkness. |
VII. Twenty-five years ago...
"What's stronger than steel and more precious than gold?" Sir Tarquin asked. The little girl's brow furrowed. "Diamonds?" she asked. The knight smiled. "Perhaps... but loyalty is more valuable and more beautiful than any gemstone. It binds your father and I, and both of us to our five brothers and sisters in the order. No matter what dangers befall us, we live and die with those bonds unbroken." Velania pondered those words as the two men rode away. Her eyes weren't on her father -- the cold, severe man in the blue panoply. They followed the warrior in red who always spoke such soft, wise words. |
VIII. The present...
"Vel!" Velania looked over her shoulder. A gnome in violet armor emerged from the temple and ran down the path between the leafless trees. The diminutive woman's plate armor was silent, even at full run. Her footsteps were swift and sure -- while her face bore a childlike anxiousness that teased the ghost of a smile from the red knight's lips. "Where are you going?" Wenni asked. "I can't go in there," Velania said. "I..." "They told me." Velania winced. "But you have to come inside," the gnome continued. "There's something for you!" |
IX. The other knights filed past Sar Velania when she entered the temple. Gauntleted hands clasped her shoulders, and gentle words rustled half-heard in her ears. Soon she was alone with Tarquin.
She approached the coffin with slow steps, almost expecting to see the lifeless features twisted in the same bitter hatred she'd last seen them wear. But her predecessor was at peace now. Long white locks framed tranquility. And there on his chest was the thing Sar Wenni had spoken of, where her name glittered in gold. Velania slipped the parchment out from under the scarlet gauntlet. Its red wax seal parted with a whisper, and the missive unrolled. It bore only two words: "I'm sorry." Sar Velania held the dead man's hand and wept. |
