Lore
1. It was long ago when the Champion of Dawn strode into battle and stood against Putrefaction, the Elemental of Corruption. The battle was long, but the Champion eventually triumphed and stood victorious over Putrefaction's remains. Unknown to him, the elemental's essence coating his weapon began to twist his thoughts before he'd even left the battlefield.
And so it was that the Champion of Dawn began his fall into darkness. |
2. The Champion of the Dawn's behavior began to change in subtle ways. He was more irritable, fast to anger and slow to calm. It wasn't until he replaced his shield for a sword, one that inflicted the cruelest wounds anyone had ever seen, that people began to grow nervous around him. |
3. Why weren't the bards singing more songs about his great exploits? Why weren't the people more grateful for his protection? If no one was going to appreciate his deeds, perhaps they should be reminded of his power.
He returned to Putrefaction's corpse and fashioned a crown from its head. The skull draped over his face, always glistening with an unhealthy sheen, and made his eyes grow fever bright. |
4. Next, he removed the monster's flesh and clothed himself in it.
Yes. This was the armor befitting a warrior of his status. It fit and moved with him like a second skin, and he immediately felt stronger with it on. With this, no foe could stand before him. None would dare. |
5. His cruelty grew more extreme. He no longer protected the people, he terrorized them by mounting the gruesome remains of his foes for public display.
The realm he was sworn to protect began to crumble and fade, its glory eroding under the weight of fear that began to settle across the land. |
6. It wasn't enough to protect these peasants. He had to rule over them, like the sniveling worms they were, if he wanted to get any of the respect he was due.
And so it was that the Champion of Dawn lurched up the steps of the palace one night and slew a king, his court, and his cabinet. By daybreak the next morning, he was the only living being still in the castle... though some might say his heart stopped beating long before. |
7. Wherever he walked, the beast that had once been the Champion of Dawn left nothing but chaos and misery in his wake. Men and women alike were executed on the spot for not worshipping him when he passed them by. He put entire villages to the sword for the crime of letting themselves be attacked by monsters.
He was no longer the realm's protector. He was its oppressor. |
8. His power grew. Of course it did. He had become Putrefaction's new vessel, and he continued to spread corruption across the realm. Twisted golems became his servants and enforcers, spreading further suffering amongst those who still lived.
Things only got worse; the land itself began to wither and die, the psychic pain taking physical manifestation. Slowly, what few people remained fled over the mountains and across the sea, seeking the promise of better lives and better tomorrows. |
9. Eventually, only the Champion of Dawn resided in that desolate country. Not even ghosts remained.
Although Putrefaction's power granted the man strength and extended his life, it could not stave off death itself. No one knows exactly how long that twisted being lasted, but when explorers returned centuries later they found his skeletal remains sitting on the desolated throne. Unsurprisingly, the armor made from Putrefaction's remains was just as strong as the day it was created. No one has dared to wear it since. Until now. |
