Lore
"Jamus is welcome to rule the living, but I rule the dead. Did that sound convincing? No, of course it's not true. But when people ask me why I wear this thing, they never believe me when I say, 'I just like the way it looks.'" -- Chai the Necro-Lord |
"If you wear black robes with skulls on them, everyone thinks you're evil," Chai says. "I'll be walking through town, on my way to buy some milk, and novice adventurers will jump out at me yelling, 'Die, spawn of darkness!' or something just as trite."
"Maybe you should get new clothes?" you say. She smiles. "Why? After I kill the little fools, in lawful self-defense, I get to keep their bodies if no one else claims them." |
"Where... What..."
The elf blinked the cobwebs from his eyes. Chai sighed, and wondered why the apprentice never remembered to dust them. "You!" He glared at her. "You tried to kill me!" "You tried to kill me first," she said. "And I've got bad news: I didn't just 'try'..." |
"You turned me into a zombie!" the gnome said.
He grabbed two fistfuls of her robe. "Release me, vile bride of darkness! Set my soul free from this foul mockery of life!" "First of all," Chai said, "real adventurers don't speak like that. If they did, they'd get stabbed the first time they went into a pub. This is what happens when you people learn your trade from crappy bard songs instead of a proper mentor. Secondly, you died attacking an innocent woman because of the way she's dressed. So if I set your soul loose, where do you think it'll end up?" "Oh..." |
"If you're going to be a necromancer," Chai said, "clothes are important."
"So we can strike fear into people's hearts?" her apprentice said. Chai sighed. "No, Marian. Because graveyards and crypts are bloody cold. If you don't wear warm clothes, you'll catch your death. Then I'll raise you and slap you for not listening." |
"Won't you fall through it?" Marian asked.
"I certainly won't, because you're the one who's going to take it up for its first flight." "What!?! Why me?" "If you break your neck, I can raise you. You're not skilled enough to do the same if I break mine." |
