Lore
1. "Are you sure this is necessary?" you ask. "It seems... Stupid."
"Don't mock our customs," the mermaid replies. "If you seek an audience with our leader, you must show your respect by donning our likeness." "Fine... Work your magic." There's a flash of light. |
2. "It's a shell. Haven't you people heard of steel?"
"It's difficult to forge steel underwater." "Oh..." "And the shells of sea creatures become hard enough when imbued with magic. Besides, it's just an illusion." "So what is it really?" "An octopus." |
3. "Will these flaps let me breathe underwater?"
"No," she says. "Those gills are an illusion. Haven't you ever worn illusions before?" "Too often. At this point it's hard to know what's real and what isn't." "Your life must be very strange." "You wouldn't believe the half of it." |
4. "If I can't breathe underwater, what am I supposed to do down there?"
"Drown." "What?" "That was a jest." She sighs and removes your hand from her throat. "The illusionary gills won't allow you to breathe, but my other spells will." "Are you sure?" "Somewhat." |
5. You dive into the water. Illusions or not, her spells must be potent. The brine isn't even stinging your eyes. And she was right. You aren't drowning. Not yet, anyway.
"This is amazing! Wait... I'm speaking. In the water." "Actually, that's just an illusion." "Oh." She rolls her eyes. |
6. "In here," your guide says.
She launches herself through the circular doorway with an elegant swish of her tail. You attempt to do the same, and manage to flounder your way inside with a little difficulty. A vast chamber lies beyond, adorned with glorious expanses of shimmering oceanic treasures. Armed merfolk line its walls. And for some reason they're all glaring at you like you ate their ancestors. So's the tall mermaid who's waiting for you in the middle of the room. |
7. "What is the meaning of this outrage?" Celcinoe exclaims. "How dare you mock us!"
"Oh... I..." You twist your body around, trying to see if some part of the illusion has worn off and thus ruined your ceremonial facade. But it all seems to be in place. "I'm not sure what you-" "You think it amusing to dress yourself as a <merman/mermaid>? Guards! Seize <him/her>!" |
