1. "I came upon an ancient manuscript that was unearthed by my excavation party deep in the earth, where the walls were lined with obsidian and luminescent crystals. The language was unlike anything I've read before, possibly written by an ancient civilization long since passed. It took some time, but with enough magic and focus, one could practically crack the cipher of any language." -- Excerpt from Tephra's journal
2. "The manuscript is a tale of a worm who became a dragon. It starts off with a lowly creature crawling on its belly, eating the dirt and the dead. From there, it goes to eating its way into a dying fox and taking control of it, until it hunted a wolf and took control of that. Then from the wolf the worm became the hawk, and on and on." -- Excerpt from Tephra's journal
3. "The story keeps going like this, the worm jumping from one apex predator to the next, more grand and deadly than the last. I thought the story would conclude when the worm jumped from human to an all-powerful dragon. And yet, the story remains incomplete, like it was missing a second part of the manuscript. I wonder what the next part of the narrative would have told..." -- Excerpt from Tephra's journal
4. "What does this say about the author of this story? Did the writer believe that switching from body to body was possible? A transmigration of the consciousness? I feel the answer to this question is in the second part of the missing manuscript." -- Excerpt from Tephra's journal.
5. "I brought my expedition back to the obsidian tunnel and ordered them to keep digging, even if it meant going to the center of Tor'gyyl if need be. I must find the second piece of the manuscript!" -- Excerpt from Tephra's journal
6. "It's been a few weeks, but I know we're making progress in our excavation! Because the closer we get, the more vivid my dreams become. In my sleep, I see the worm in the story, squirming through the world, eating its way upwards into the predatory chain, until it becomes the dragon it was meant to be." -- Excerpt from Tephra's journal
7. "A few months have passed and all we have to show for it is a golem? It doesn't even work, bah! Who cares about that anyway, all I want is the manuscript. I know it's there in the earth somewhere, because in my dreams I see the world through the worm. I squirm and writhe, I quiver across the ground, taste the dirt it eats, taste the predators it consumes, until it devours and becomes the dragon. And when I wake up, I have a lingering flavor of blood on my tongue. It tastes of bitter iron, warm and effervescent. This must be what immortality tastes like." -- Excerpt from Tephra's journal
8. "Yes! It's mine, all mine! The second part of the manuscript! I've translated it and it does contain the final passage of the story: the worm, in the form of the dragon, consumes a god and ascends into the realm of deities. The great god worm, how glorious! And as I predicted, the second part of the manuscript holds the ritual to exchange consciousness with another being. It's a spell like none other, and I will be the first to cast it, and become a god." -- Excerpt from Tephra's journal
You wonder how these golems were ever created. Tephra's journals hinted that a civilization hidden underground, accessed through a network of obsidian tunnels, were the ones to make the constructs. Whoever these ancient people were, it seems transmigration was part of the creation process for golems.
