Lore
While Rassys, the goddess of love, had her angelic hosts of Love Menders and Heralds to fix the broken-hearted mortals of the world, there were also the Love Messengers, whose role was not of salvation. Rather, their sole purpose was to destroy the demons who would spread hatred and despair in the realm of mortals. |
3. The goddess of love witnessed the malignant nature of the Oculus Occult leader called the Visionary when she made the two lovers fight against each other. The modus operandi of the battle would prove the Occult's sophistry: love was an illusion. The victor of the fight would kill the other and be promoted into the inner circle of the Visionary.
Rassys watched as the two lovers struggled in an arena, with the Visionary and the rest of the occult members viewing closely. The goddess of love gasped, her heart shuddering dreadfully as she saw Theo sacrifice himself out of his tenderness for Chandra. |
4. Occulus Occult members are damned to hell because of their infusion with demon fire and dark magic. The moment Theo died, she could see him descending down a long pulsing corridor of blades, fangs and agony, ripping him apart as his eternal torment. But Rassys would not let this happen, his sacrifice for Chandra had moved her immortal being and awoken the love that had grown dim in her heart.
The gods always interfered with mortal affairs, but rarely did they ever intervene with the business of demons. When the gods obstructed the plans of hell, there was always a price, always a repercussion. But she didn't care at that moment. She had to save Theo. So Rassys reached out to the most tender part of Theo's heart, pulled out a simulacrum of his inner essence and physical attributes, then drew him close. |
5. When Rassys brought Theo into her court of angels, he had no memory of anything from his mortal life, nor of his moment of torment in hell. But at least his physical ailments that he suffered during the time under the Oculus Occult, the hellfire burns and scars, were healed, as if they never happened in the first place. As a result, Theo did not keep the visual prowess that the cult members were known for. He was a clean slate, an empty vessel to be filled with new properties and memories.
The goddess of love knew that the demons of hell would not appreciate her interference in their affairs of claiming mortals. She had to train Theo right away, give him the knowledge and tools he needed to survive and fight the dreaded enemies that were soon to come. |
6. Rassys wasn't a warrior god by any means, but thankfully she had celestial allies to help with her cause to train Theo in the art of combat. She knew that Terracles was a renowned and capable warrior, so she employed his aid. However, it seemed the reborn, angelic Theo wasn't as confident in his combat capabilities compared to his mortal Oculus Occult counterpart.
It wouldn't be enough that Theo be the only angel in Rassys' ranks to know how to fight against demons, so she decided a whole legion of warriors would be better suited. And so she asked Terracles to train more angels, and called them her Love Messengers, the ardent fighters of love |
7. The demons began attacking Rassys' angels for her interference in the affairs of hell. But because she had prepared for this event, her legion of Love Messengers always came in to defend their celestial companions. Eventually, the battle angels were sent out on patrols, carrying out sorties and skirmishes against any demon they saw and terminating them. Their original cause, to be the warriors and defenders of love, was starting to become opaque, as they began operating more like envoys of Karuss, god of paladins, than the love-fighters of Rassys. |
8. One day, when Theo was flying on patrol to eradicate the demon threat that roamed the mortal realm, he spotted a warrior woman defending herself against a hell-fiend with a scythe of jagged teeth. Around them lay the bodies of the woman's companions, who had every manner of injuries inflicted upon them: slashed throats, disemboweled entrails, and one dying man who wormed his way in agony towards his dismembered arm.
Theo landed in front of the demon before he could advance any further towards the woman. He drew his sickle and shield and proclaimed, "Face me demon, for your future is death!" |
9. The demon wore a mask, much like the Oculus Occult members Theo had heard much about. But the hell-fiend's flesh had melted over the metal, infused onto his face. Moreover, the devil's battle armor was akin to Theo's, except it was grim and fiendish, a twisted representation of his own armament.
The devil advanced, swinging his scythe for a brutal strike, but Theo blocked the attack with his shield. The connection of the attack awakened memories he had forgotten: hellfire, purification, Oculus Occult. Theo pressed the demon backward with his own shield, as he swung his scythe towards his enemy's torso. The attack was blocked by the hilt of the scythe, and more memories came rushing back into Theo: Visionary, Chandra, lover. The angel swung his shield across, but the demon dodged. It was a feint maneuver, giving Theo the opening he needed to throw his sickle and struck the demon's chest. |
10. The demon howled in pain as he pulled the sickle out of himself. Theo cried in agony as well, clutching his own chest as the pain was mirrored onto his own body. More memories flooded his mind, spiking into his brain with further images: sacrifice, hell, Rassys.
Then Theo saw the moment the goddess of love saved him from hell, pulling him out of the most tender part of his heart, and ascending into the celestial realm. But another part of him kept falling, kept getting massacred, continued to be ripped apart and tormented by hell for eternity. And then the angel came to a revelation: that was the moment when the light and the darkness his Theo's heart were separated into two beings. It was that dividing moment that Theo became Zhelvos, Demon of Despair. |
