Lore
1.
There was no moon in the sky over Shoreguard Keep. The dark clouds obscured its light, and left the dark to crowd heavy and close against the battlements. The watchers of the Shoreguard walked the walls in the dark, straining their eyes into the night, and stamped their feet against the stone to keep them warm. The night was bitter cold, and the Shoreguard were on edge. No moon meant no warning, and all could smell a storm in the air. |
2.
Captain Uthin paced. Word from the southlands brought tales of the war, which of late had begun to feel less and less distant. The order had sworn to guard the shore against all threats by sea, but he worried that one day the danger would creep in behind them. A muffled knock at the door. "Enter." Jorn pushed the door open and stood with eyes cast down at his shifting feet. He was one of the junior members of the watch, perhaps fifteen at the eldest. It was his first season at the keep. |
3.
"Pardon sir, here to make the report. Nothin' out of the ordinary so's far as we can see. But that isn't much, the --" A shout came from above, followed by raised voices and pounding feet. Uthin pushed past the boy and made for the stairs to the battlements, nearly colliding with the Shoreguard who burst from the stairway. "Dragon spotted," she blurted as she regained her breath. Her face was pale. "Off the shore, out over the water. Lightning lit it up." |
4.
"Headed this way?" "Aye, maybe. Came to get you, thought you'd want to see for yourself, Captain." Uthin nodded and moved past her. His composure was steady, but he took the stairs two at a time. He went to the battlements and stared out into the dark, willing it to show him that the dragon was simply a bit of stormcloud and imagination. But the lightning flashed again, and he saw it silhouetted there in the night. The great shadow of a drake, wings spread, huge in the sky. There was a gasp from his left. "It's closer" |
5.
"Aye, but that's not the worst of it." He muttered. "Watch the sea." The watchers huddled around, staring, silent. At last the next flash of lightning forked down and they followed its path to the sea, where it grounded in a flash of fire amidst a forest of sails. "Oh, gods…" The dragon was circling in the growing storm. Below it, the massive masts and swollen sails of a war fleet. "...it's the giants." |
6.
Uthin snatched the horn from the nerveless hands of a watcher at the battlements and raised it to his lips, loosing a trumpeting blast that shook the stupor of shock from the Shoreguard. Faces from all around turned toward him. "All riders to your horses, the villages must be warned. Ride as fast as you're able, and stop for nothing. The people must know: the war is here. The giant's fleet -- and the dragon that flies with it -- will be on us by dawn. This is a full evacuation! Everyone ready for travel, everyone rides tonight!" |
7.
Shoreguard Keep was turned inside out. Horses streamed from the gate in a continuous exodus of riders as they swarmed out like ants from a flooded hill and spread across the landscape. Uthin stood at the battlements and watched the brewing storm. The lightning was constant now, and seemed concentrated on the giant's fleet. He could see sails burning now, in the night. But still they drew closer. Uthin frowned. Why had the dragons allied with the giants? |
8.
"The dragon and the giants, they are at war. We are witnessing a battle on the water. One that will spill over us when it reaches the shore, to be sure, as a wave spills over an insect. They care nothing for us." Uthin glanced to the voice. It was the old shaman, wrapped in his furs. "Elvigar. You should evacuate with the rest." The shaman made no motion, nor even any acknowledgement his captain had spoken. His face was lined and grim. Uthin shrugged and looked back out to sea. |
9.
"Your eyes are sharper than mine, Elvigar. What do you see?" "The dragon casts the lightning, he is the center of the storm. This is a fearsome drake, and no minor fledgeling. And that is no common raiding fleet, either. There, just where the lightning struck… the Giant King. His ship leads them. This is a fleet that sails to war." Uthin felt his face drain of blood. "The king of the giants, and a greater drake? No matter which of them wins, our people are doomed." Elvigar reached to his neck and fingered the crystal that hung there. "Maybe not. Be on your way, Captain. There is yet one magic I might try. I would prefer no one stayed behind to see me pay its cost." |
