King Folpert of Ranl, a well-meaning but somewhat moronic ruler, was known for taking proverbs rather too literally. This once caused him to pass a law making it illegal to kill a man until you'd walked a mile in his boots -- a measure designed to curb the assassin's guild, which was exempt from regular murder laws by a longstanding treaty with the crown. The guild's solution was to purchase numerous pairs of boots and declare them public property, belonging to every man, woman, and child in the kingdom. Their assassins could therefore simply don a pair and go for a walk before continuing to ply their trade. | |
