Lore
Librarians take their jobs very seriously. Thus readers who neglect to return books to their shelves after a research session may find themselves beaten with a stack of those very same volumes. |
A mob of drunken yokels alleviated their afternoon boredom by bursting into a library and assaulting its students. This even caused the master librarians to issue their apprentices with daggers, so that they could defend themselves if it should ever happen again. It became mandatory for an apprentice to carry their dagger wherever they went, even inside examination halls. Thus unscrupulous students used the weapons as cheating aids -- by inscribing answers on their blades. |
In theory a librarian's hood is meant to shut out the world and help the wearer concentrate. Whereas in practice the garments' prime use is to conceal impromptu naps, and allow apprentices to sleep at their tables undisturbed. |
"Oi!" the librarian said. "If you want to haunt my library, you'll keep your trap shut! People are trying to read."
"Sorry," the ghost replied. His ghastly face assumed a sheepish look, and he ceased wailing. "And stop stabbing that apprentice!" "Okay..." |
Apprentices who don't wash their hands after eating, or at least don a pair of gloves to shield the books from greasy fingers, are liable to have those digits stamped on by their superiors. One particularly harsh librarian even made an example of an apprentice by having the lad's hands cut off and pinned to the wall for a week. Though he relented after that, and had them sewn back on again -- much to the zombie's delight. |
"Have you got a book that'll teach me how to read?" -- An entry in Master Librarian Daet's grand opus, 'Stupid Things I've Heard in My Library' |
Some master librarians can recognize any book in their library by touch, smell or 'thud level'. The latter refers to the loudness of the sound made when the book is dropped onto a table from a given height. |
"Respect the books!" -- Imprinted in reverse on librarians' rings, and the right way around on the faces of people who neglect to heed that advice |
