Lore
I. "Accept this heart!" the priestess said. "Accept this offering of blood and life!"
The boy screamed. He struggled on the altar, tugging against the ropes at his wrists and ankles. The priestess grinned. Screams were good -- they'd draw the gods' attention. "This heart is yours!" She lifted the obsidian dagger in both hands. Its point hovered above his chest. "This soul is yours!" A shadow descended over the step pyramid. |
II. She laughed. Her gods proved their might! They'd stolen the sun, cast darkness across the sacrificial platform, and...
"Stop," a voice said. It was calm but powerful, descending from the sky. "Now." The priestess looked up, and stared at the massive face looming over her. Bah! This strange giantess -- whose skin was pale, features softer and more beautiful than others of her kind -- wouldn't stop the sacrifice. Not even the giants could match the gods! "This heart is yours!" she said, as she drove the dagger down. |
III. Thisne sighed and flicked her. The priestess flew through the air, still babbling in religious fervor. She reached the apex of her arc -- startling a hawk -- and plummeted towards the jungle below.
"I gave her a chance. You heard me." She looked at the boy on the altar. But he only stared at her, mouth wide open -- frozen in a silent scream. Thisne sighed again. "Gratitude wouldn't go astray," she said. |
IV. "He probably thinks you're going to eat him," Jodis said.
The girl from Nordent touched down atop the pyramid, stumbled a few paces, and bumped into the altar. "Nice landing," Thisne said. Jodis glared at her and drew her knife. The boy stared at the steel blade and wailed. |
V. "It's okay," Jodis said. "I'm... He can't understand me, can he?"
"No." The angel sighed and cut the rope binding his left wrist to the altar. He stopped shrieking. "You should learn their language," Thisne said. "Why?" Jodis slashed the next rope. "After we're done, I never want to come back to Chalua. What sort of cleric cuts out people's hearts?" |
VI. "An evil or misguided one."
Jodis freed the boy. He rubbed his wrists and swung his legs off the altar. Jodis braced him when he stumbled, and supported him till his legs were firm. "We need to find more giants," Thisne said. She stood up straight, letting the sunlight bathe Jodis and the Chaluan. "That tribeswoman said there was one near here who can call down the rain and lightning. If that's true, his heart might be powerful..." "We can't leave him here," Jodis said, nodding at the boy. "If they take him again, we won't be around to stop them." |
VII. "Fly him back to his tribe then."
Jodis frowned, and reached her arms out to the Chaluan. He flinched. "Trust her," Thisne said. "She wants to take you to your people." The boy looked up at the titaness, then back at the angel. This time he stayed still when Jodis embraced him. "Adorable." "Shut up..." |
VIII. Jodis flapped her wings and began to rise. The Chaluan gasped. He held her tight, locking his arms around her, squeezing like a python.
"Wait! Stop! I... I can't..." She swayed back and forth, wings clawing at the air, and fell. The two of them collapsed in a heap. Thisne laughed. "Mathala should've taught you how to use those things properly." "You're the one who's big as a mountain. Why don't you do the carrying?" |
IX. "Fine..."
Thisne reached for the boy. He yelped and scrabbled away, scuttling backwards on his hands like a crab. She rolled her eyes. Jodis got up and helped him to his feet, grabbing his arm when he tried to pull away. "If you want to stay here," Thisne said, "you can. But if you want to keep your heart inside your chest..." She laid her hand down on top of the pyramid. Jodis coaxed the boy into it, giving him a gentle push when he hesitated. "I hope your people live close," the titaness said. "There's a giant I want to kill..." |
