Many guardsmen prefer to leave their faces uncovered, so that the people in the towns and cities they patrol may see them as more than faceless enforcers of the law. And for an experienced lawman, face to face communication can be a useful tool when it comes to quelling trouble. But there are others, often those who are little better than criminals themselves, who love the anonymity closed helms provide.
A warm heart can be a tremendous asset for a guardsman. And those who want theirs to remain warm and beating shield them with steel.
"There's nothing like dropping your hand onto a criminal's shoulder - making them feel the grasp they've been dreading ever since the day they started breaking the law. Though smashing your fist in their face comes close." - Marcus
"A guardsman is nothing without a sturdy codpiece. I learned that on my first patrol, and the lesson was too painful to forget." - Marcus
A guardsman's boots are an important part of the uniform. They must be comfortable enough for long hours of patrolling the cobbled streets, warm enough to endure the wind and the rain, and - at least for a certain type of guardsman - hard enough to kick a confession out of a suspect.
