| 1. Aleida leapt to the prow of her little fishing boat. The aged vessel rocked beneath her, protesting such abuse of its venerable wood. But a daughter and granddaughter of fishing folk knew how to keep her balance when she was out on the lake. It subsided with a creak that sounded like a grumble.
She scoured the water. It was calm. Still. Tranquil. But she knew what she'd seen in the corner of her eye. Aleida set her rod aside, grabbed her spear. Her muscles tensed and tightened. A mighty splash broke the surface. "Die!" She rose and thrust. "Hey! Be careful with that thing!" | |
