Lore

I. Thump thump. Thump thump. The beating echoed in Kaen's ears, scratching at the back of his skull. He knelt before the tree, hand upon its bark and listened. Images, memories flashed before Kaen's eyes, times worn away by time into the annals of history of his once stalwart people.
II. Thump thump. Thump thump. It called to him as it always did. It was hungry and restless as its roots dug ever deeper into the earth of the forest floor. Kaen had tended the great oak from seedling to a mighty tree for much of his life, but as the years went on the tree's whims overtook his own and he found himself answering to it instead of the other way around.
III. Thump thump. Thump thump. Kaen nestled a trap in the brush, he set it down gently with a bloody piece of fresh meat. He waited motionless among the foliage until a lone and fatigued wolf came into sight. Salivating at the prospect of a potential meal it slowly walked up to the meat Kaen had laid out for it, sniffing with darting eyes seeking danger from every corner. Still, Kaen remained motionless, his scent meshing with the rich, earthy tones of the forest. The wolf's hunger overcame its caution and it crept forward to eat the morsel, and as its jaws encased the sweet meat, vines rushed up from the earth and encircled the beast.
IV. Thump thump. Thump thump. The wolf snapped at the vines as they began to squeeze the life from its body. Kaen stared onward, emotionless as the blood flowed freely from the once noble beast's veins onto the forest floor. As quickly as the droplets kissed the ground they retreated into the earth with unnatural speed and Kaen could hear the rhythmic beating of a heart intensify in his ears once more.
V. Thump thump. Thump thump. As the great tree finished with the wolf, it beckoned Kaen closer. Though the great oak could not communicate in the traditional sense, Kaen could see images flash in his mind's eye. He removed a small piece of bark from the great tree with mighty effort, hacking and sawing it away with his dagger. He approached the desiccated corpse of the wolf and placed the bark on its skull and stepped back.
VI. Thump thump. Thump thump. Before his eyes vines sprouted from the piece of bark he rested atop the wolf's skull. They encased the creature and a green glow pulsed through the vines, rupturing bits of flesh. A sickening, grinding sound came forth and Kaen covered his ears and backed away. Minutes turned to hours and still the grinding continued until at long last he could hear the gentle embrace of silence overtake the forest.
VII. Thump thump. Thump thump. He opened his eyes and stared at the beast before him, a creature forged of bone and root, neither living nor dead. It padded over to him and a rough, viney tongue shot out and licked his hand. He placed his palm on the beast's head and could feel the tree's presence. Images were lanced into his brain, images of a disappearing forest, dead things, live things, desiccated things, and Kaen himself all the while riding atop the creature before him.
VIII. Thump thump. Thump thump. He swung his leg on top of the wolf's back and seated himself as comfortably as he could. The creature took off at a run and Kaen felt something encircle his hand. He didn't fight the feeling but instead leaned into it, allowed it, opened himself to its presence. He could feel the great oak taking hold inside of him, filling him with its power and desires.
X. Thump thump. Thump thump. Miles had disappeared in a haze and he knelt at a river's edge to look out into the forest. How long he had traveled for he could not say, but his body was weak. He collapsed and his steadfast mount watched from the riverbank as vines encircled Kaen's body. Pain overtook him but he could not scream for he lacked the strength to do so. The world turned green and he could feel the roots taking hold of his tissue, and in the back of his mind he could feel the pieces of who he was shed away as he became one with the oak he had tended for countless years. Thump thump. Thump thump.
IX. Thump thump. Thump thump. A hunger stirred within Kaen, and he stopped often to lay similar snares as he had for the wolf. At each location he planted a small seed and despite the ever growing distance between himself and the tree he could feel every root and every vine as if they were his own. The heart beat was growing louder.
Once a great and well revered druid, Kaen discovered the worn out, worm ridden husk of an ancient oak and from that mighty tree a small seed struggled to survive in an inhospitable world. Kaen lived up to his druidic training and returned that seed to his people where he tended to it and let it grow into a mighty bastion of nature. None in his order could know the true cost of his decision.
The druids deep within the Vinewood forest were guardians of both creature and human alike, working towards the harmony and betterment of all species. Though none have seen their like for many years, reports have started circulating the local villages of human like constructs forged from root and bones and filled with malice. None dare enter the Vinewood forest, for the creatures that dwell within are insatiable.
Though slow and methodical, the roots of the Vinewood forest span many miles and their presence is felt across all of West Kruna.
