Lore

Enter battle

Lore
The dragon continues to roar, his neck craning up at the black heavens. The bellow booms through the night, seeming loud enough to wake the whole world. At last he stops, and in the distance you can hear the shouts and howls of his minions as they move to answer their master's call.

The dragon lowers his head and gazes into your eyes. For a moment, you imagine you're back in Burden's Rest, touching the egg, so similar does it feel to the vision you saw then.

Solus growls, bringing you back to reality. You cannot hesitate. The wyrm must die. To the shouts of your men, the bestial cries of distant enemies, and the crescendo flying from Medea's harp, you attack.

Victory

Lore
The dragon shrieks, its wail almost like that of a human, so different from its former roar that it seems impossible that the same noises emerged from the same throat.

Its great wings unfurl, snatching at the air in desperate flaps of motion, as if the dying beast thinks to escape the fate closing in on it. One wing still bears the gaping hole torn into it by the elven sceptre's blast, ruined and worthless, and the air escapes its grasp like a branch eluding the clutch of a drowning man.

The dragon's eyes bore into yours but its gaze has no power over you now, can instill no fear. Already the blue orbs glow dim, its neck reaches up at the sky in a sharp jerk. Then it collapses, the drake's head crashing to the ground.

There's exactly one second of frozen silence. Then the cheer goes up, dozens and dozens of throats yelling their triumph to all the world. It is a beautiful cacophony of sound, of blended profanities and curses, expressions of ecstasy and tributes to lost loved ones mingling together. Medea's music envelops this like a mantle, its shifting melodies picking out each emotion and intensifying it until it threatens to pierce the heavens with its force!

The quiet comes more slowly, creeping in from the edges of the crowd like a contagious infection until silence reigns once more. You look around, taking your gaze off the dragon's dead eyes, and see why.

The horde has arrived, hundreds and hundreds of monsters, just standing there, watching. It almost seems comical, as if you and your companions are actors performing on stage, and they're the audience. Their eyes are focused not on you, not on their enemies, but on their master's broken body. They stare awestruck like worshippers at the funeral of their god, then one of them howls and the moment is broken, other savage throats take up the call, a cry of pure rage and the desire for vengeance.

Your companions draw up their ranks, prepared to sell their lives dear in a battle against insurmountable odds. You move to the front, ready to lead them into death as you've led them ever since Burden's Rest. Your work is done, the dragon lies dead. Fate has smiled on you, and now it's time to pay the debt.

Medea's harp strikes a defiant tune, a song which weaves images of last stands, of glorious final battles, a tune fit to die beneath and to your amazement, a second song arises from the night air to answer it.

A series of loud whispering noises fills the sky and a silver rain falls upon the monstrous horde. At first it seemed like sorcery, as if the very gods themselves have chosen to visit their wrath upon the creatures. Then you see it for what it really is, a volley of shining arrows, arcing down from the heavens, the monsters' charge breaks and they scurry back in disarray.

Slender forms emerge from the shadows, hooded beings which first seem like phantoms. Then they come closer, into the light from the campfires. Elves! Medea's people, arriving as she promised they would. They sheathe their bows as they come and draw long swords from their scabbards.

A fresh cheer goes up from your companions, and you charge into the fray. The elves give a cry of their own, its tone elegant, its meaning, unintelligible, and join you.

Flee/Defeat

Lore
The black dragon roars as you run into the night, and seek cover behind your companions. Roland screams for you to pull yourself together, and Medea's song seems to urge you back into the fight. You have to slay the wyrm...
