Lore
I. Derek the Daring fought in Arcadius Selutha's ranks when that nobleman defended Ralmarthan and slew the gold dragon which beset it. Despite whispers that Derek had shied away from much of the fighting, and only wounded the dragon by chance whilst swinging his sword in a blind panic, he was fond of bragging about the victory -- calling himself a dragon-slayer. He would stride into taverns and be plied with tankards of ale in exchange for the telling of his exploits, enjoying the boasting as much as the drunkenness, if not more so. He reveled in the gasps of awestruck maidens, the looks of respect from men who aspired to one day be his equal. |
II. It was during one of his ale-quaffing, tale-telling sessions that Derek came face-to-face with a band of naysayers. Those men and women were a party of adventurers, all of them experienced enough to know empty braggadocio when they heard it. They scoffed at Derek, and challenged him to prove his might as a dragon-slayer -- offering him all the plunder they had seized from their latest dungeon if he did battle with a wyrm before their eyes. Derek, his courage bolstered by drink and the lies which he by now almost believed himself, accepted. |
III. In the morning Derek awoke, his head split and his memories scattered by the ale. He sensed that something had happened the night before, but couldn't for the life of him remember what it was. Only when he went down for his breakfast of bacon and kidneys did he learn about the terrible predicament his boasting had thrust him into. Derek sauntered towards the tavern's door, whistling his feigned nonchalance as he calculated how long it would take to reach his horse and gallop away. But outside he found the adventurers waiting for him, along with a crowd of cheering townspeople. |
IV. The adventurers told Derek that a purple dragon had been seen on a nearby hilltop, and demanded that he make good on his promise by facing that beast in battle. For had he not told them, in a moment of alcohol-induced stupidity, that he once single-handedly slew a drake? Derek mumbled his excuses, but to no avail. The crowd bustled him towards the hill and his fate. Once they reached that place they pointed to the distant purple form perched atop it, and shoved him towards the path which would lead him there. |
V. Derek trembled with each footstep. He yearned to flee into the countryside, to lose himself in the forests, but he knew that the adventurers would ride him down and drag him back. So he stumbled his way up the path, like a man going to the gallows, until he found himself staring at the purple dragon. When the wyrm gazed upon him he wept. But to his amazement she didn't burn him with her breath, or devour him with her mighty jaws. Instead she demanded to know what troubled him. For the purple dragon was Penelope, a human woman whose body had been transformed through a careless magical wish -- leaving her in the guise of a drake. Thus Derek wasn't fated to die at her teeth and claws, and the tears dried upon his cheeks. |
VI. Derek poured the story out to her, telling of his boasting and his wager. Penelope laughed. Then she told him what to do. As the adventurers and townspeople looked on, they saw the braggart clash with the dragon in heroic combat. He swung his sword like a mighty champion, driving her back with blow after blow until she took to the air -- screaming as though in pain and cursing the hero for besting her. She fled, and the crowd cheered the victory -- save for the adventurers. Derek was glad to relieve them of their treasure, and more than willing to keep his word by donating a sizable portion to the orphanage in which Penelope had grown up. |
